5/8 Barcelona and San Francisco, twin cities
Barcelona and San Francisco, two cities joined by tourism, its proximity to the sea, an excellent climate and rich culture have signed a twinning agreement undertake to strengthen their collaboration in the area of innovation, leadership and social transformation, and as well as to promote economic, scientific and cultural exchanges.
Among other actions, it should be pointed out various agreements with Catalan universities or synergies between the ports of both cities, and a series of conferences in the entrepreneur lounge BizBarcelona, Imagine creativity center, or the celebration of the legendary Catalan tradition Sant Jordi in San Francisco.
It all started when in 2010, the two cities signed a cooperation agreement that materialized in the Committee of San Francisco Barcelona Sister Cities (SFO-BCN) a non-profit organization supported by both city councils, chambers of commerce and academic institutions like Stanford, Berkeley, IESE and ESADE.
Fariba Rezvani, president of San Francisco-Barcelona Sister Cities and regular guest of the Hotel Omm and his restaurant Roca Bar, explains that the main short-term goal is to “bring hope to entrepreneurs in Barcelona and get a direct flight between the two cities”. He adds that they would also like to establish strong partnerships with companies and established organizations to create more jobs.
Behind this historic moment, we must also highlight the involvement of the Association of Friends of Gaspar de Portolà, a Catalan explorer who by the way is known by his discovery of San Francisco.
Definitely, it has been worth waiting three years of hard work to see the fruits of a project that fights so the entrepreneurs here have more facilities to settle in San Francisco or the Bay Area and on the other hand, it opens Barcelona’s doors to the companies from California who want to open a new office in an European city open to the world.
